Addiction is very prevalent in modern society and often people develop dependencies on certain types of drugs, behaviours or alcohol. One of the best ways to stop or manage these addictions is to attend a residential addiction rehabilitation centre, but for those who haven???t dealt with these centres or with addiction before, it can be difficult to choose the best one for themselves or a loved one who has developed an addiction.
It is therefore important that certain things are considered during the selection process for the best results. Most facilities embrace very similar support models, and the 12-step programme is still one of the most successful programmes out there. It is, however, vital that the addiction rehabilitation centre that is chosen suits the person who will be using it, as addiction programmes have much better results when the programme and environment suits the individual attending.
Here are a few considerations to take into account:
Residential vs Outpatient
While there are many outpatient programmes available, the best is still to attend a residential facility, as these produce better overall results. Outpatient programmes are usually recommended to provide additional support after a residential programme has been completed. During a residential programme, the patient will be required to live at the facility for a certain period of time, and this could be anything between three weeks and three months, depending on the facility and the preferences of the patient.
These facilities also provide around-the-clock medical support, counsellors, therapy sessions, and anything else to help the patient to work through addiction issues and to stop addictive behaviour. It is possible to live at home and to attend an outpatient programme, but the success rate of outpatient treatment as a first step is not as high as a residential programme. At a residential facility, temptation is also removed, which gives the patient a higher chance of success and a much lower likelihood to relapse within the first few days or weeks of treatment.
Do Research
Have a look at the treatment facilities, the medical professionals and the counsellors at the centre, and ask questions about the success rate of the particular facilities you are looking at. Any addiction rehabilitation centre worth its salt should have access to a full-time medical practitioner, medically-trained nurses or centre staff, and qualified and trained psychologists and/or counsellors. In some cases, a psychiatrist is also provided. They also have to provide adequate and tasty nutrition (three meals per day) and medication where needed.
Does Your Medical Aid Cover Costs?
Many medical aids in South Africa cover a portion of primary residential treatment or even pay for it in full. The amount of cover you will have will depend on the medical aid you have. It is also essential that the facility you choose is listed as a recognised facility by your medical aid, in order for them to be able to claim costs. Avoid rehab facilities that are not registered with the relevant bodies, as this often means that they do not comply with regulations and are not in a position to provide adequate or appropriate care.
