Statistics
In South Africa, the men are very proud ??? to such an extent that they have to show others that they can consume lots of alcohol without really being affected by the alcohol. It is a common fact that the continuous abuse of alcohol mostly leads to addiction. Once again, the pride of the men would prevent them from admitting that they have this problem. Women, to a lesser extent, are not excluded as some of them are also using alcohol extensively. The advantage of women is that they are easier to admit it when they encounter this problem. Statistics show that South Africa is the 19th biggest drinking nation in the world, and number 3 in Africa, this with an abstention rate of 73%! Statistics indicate that 28% of South African men are exhibiting a risky drinking behaviour, with 5% of women exhibiting the same. The highest risk occurs between the ages of 20 and 40.
Alcohol rehabilitation
Most South Africans consider alcohol rehabilitation to be exclusively for weak people ??? those who are incapable to take control of their lives ??? and therefore, these centres are ridiculed and even despised. However, it takes guts for a person to admit that they have a problem. Remember: No one in history has ever choked to death from swallowing their pride. Therefore, an alcohol rehabilitation centre is there to help these people get back to a healthy life so that they can live life to the fullest. This is the right thing to do.
The symptoms of alcohol addiction
The symptoms are usually so obvious that they are self-diagnosable. A person who starts to get addicted, or who is already addicted to alcohol, will show some of the following signs. Physically, the person becomes shaky, sweating, and even dizzy, often struggling with nausea, and starting to crave for the next drink. These people become aggressive ??? showing a lack of restraint that results in compulsive and self-destructive behaviour, and followed by fear and even delirium. They show signs of anxiety and general discontent, with a feeling of euphoria directly followed by a feeling of loneliness or guilt.
The warning signs
Red lights must flash when someone starts lying about their drinking habits, when they feel obligated to have a drink to relax or feel better, and when they start drinking continuously. People should start worrying when they crave for a drink during inappropriate times ??? for example, before driving or going to work. When people start to feel irritable, anxious, or depressed because they feel like they need another drink, or start to withdraw from people, then the warning signs are obvious. The worst sign is when a person tries to stop drinking and discovers that it is impossible.
